Rachel Carson Salt Pond
I've put a lot of thought into needlepoint as a "granny craft," and that has led to this series of canvases. Needlepoint is for everyone, and this series celebrates just how badass our grandmothers are.
This canvas is in honor of Rachel Louise Carson (1907-1964), scientist and author. Her work catalyzed the global environmental movement, especially her book Silent Spring (1962) which addressed how pesticides such as DDT were poisoning our rivers and soils. This book and the resulting outcry sparked the movement that eventually led to the creation of the EPA.
The design is based on a view of the Rachel Carson Salt Pond Preserve in New Harbor, Maine. This tidal pool was the inspiration for her book The Edge of the Sea (1955), and is open to the public under the stewardship of The Nature Conservancy.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this canvas will be donated to The Nature Conservancy to support their work. This is especially fitting, as Carson was a founding member of the Maine chapter of TNC. The royalties from Silent Spring help fund their work protecting the Maine coast.
"The Nature Conservancy is a global environmental nonprofit working to create a world where people and nature can thrive."
The canvas is hand painted on 18 mesh and measures about 5" in diameter.
The base price is for the canvas alone. May be kitted with 3-ply Colonial Persian wool or Pepper Pot silk - please choose the appropriate option for your choice.
Your canvas will arrive with fabric bias tape finished edges, but the fabric design may not match any in the sample picture.
